A Healthy Lifestyle: Why is it so Important?

We define a “healthy lifestyle” as a “disease-free” lifestyle, the ability to attend weekly classes with no excuses, or run easily after your grandchildren in the backyard.

The people who are the most at risk for premature death are the ones who smoke frequently, follow a poor diet, are physically inactive, or consume too much alcohol. Leading a healthy lifestyle includes following a balanced diet program, engaging in physical activity, and take care of your overall health.

A nutritious diet program includes lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. This way, you will maintain your energy levels high throughout the day.

To add, practice yoga, aerobics, and strength-building exercises to prevent weight gain which might lead to chronic conditions.

Get rid of unhealthy habits (i.e. consuming alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc.) to maintain your well-being and your overall health. Introducing healthy habits may seem hard at first, but, the results worth fighting for. Allowing your body to rest during a proper sleep is also a good option to kick start your healthy journey.

Without further due, let’s look at some additional benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

A Healthy Lifestyle Prevents Diseases

Are you someone who hates sports? Well, I have bad news for you. Physical inactivity leads to chronic diseases. But don’t worry, you can still change your habits! Fortunately, you can decrease your risk of diseases through engaging in physical activity throughout the week and being mindful of what you eat . Unhealthy diets (i.e. those high in saturated fats, processed foods, and sugar) put you at risk of developing diabetes. Being overweight has never been pleasant or healthy, especially when it increases your risk for arthritis, cancer, and blood pressure. Having a BMI of 25 or less lowers significantly the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Improves Mental Health

Each one of us experiences stress every day, however, the way we deal with it differs. Learning how to effectively deal with everyday pressure and anxiety boosts your health. To illustrate, engaging in regular exercise and following a balanced diet decreases the levels of stress (especially in women), increases happiness and the ability to stay focused. I find yoga to be very effective, others may find specific breathing techniques in the morning a great way to kick start their long day. For a better quality of sleep, I recommend you spend some time in thoughtful reflection before going to bed.

A healthy lifestyle not only improves your overall health but adds years as well. Several studies, including the one conducted by the “American Journal of Public Health” in 2002, showed that quitting smoking before the age of 35, adds almost 8 years of life, and quitting at 65 still adds almost 3 years of life. Be mindful of what you eat, stay physically active, and control your stress levels for a long and healthy life. After all, who doesn’t want to see their grandchildren get married?
